ERIC FROM NARAUIS, NEGROS

I sat at lunch with a young man called Eric (talking with me here at the community centre).

He is 17. As we're tucking into chicken and pork and rice and fish and prawns and fresh fruit ... and more, Eric says to me "God is good!"

Now, I wasn't going to argue, especially looking at all that food, but I was a bit surprised. I mean, how often does it happen? You're eating your dinner and the person next to you tells you that God is good! No. It doesn't. Perhaps we should, but it doesn't happen.

Eric tells me about his life, how his mum died when he was eight, and his dad died when he was twelve, and he's had to earn money since then to help his sister who looks after him as well as her own children. He says he feels lonely sometimes, but God encourages him, keeps him going, makes him smile.
