(I wasn't) Expecting This
Going back to school to watch the Christmas play I feel so sorry for the little boy who has to say, “I’ve got no room for you, you’ll have to go away.” He’s become the villain of the first Christmas Day. He takes the blame, he takes the blame, He wasn’t expecting this
Shepherds round the fire, in the middle of the night, Cosy darkness shattered by a choir of angel-light; “Messiah has been born,” they say, a baby to a girl. An ordinary event it seems to change the world. They dance and sing, they dance and sing, They just weren’t expecting this.
Searching for a king, looking in the sky, Wise men ask of Herod, now innocents must die; They wander on not knowing, to Bethlehem they’re told, Taking all their gifts with them, myrrh, frankincense and gold; Much wiser now, much wiser now, They weren’t expecting this
Guess this is a story we all know so well, Then forget the sequel so much harder to retell, How the little baby became a man one day, Prepared to suffer and die to take our sin and shame. He took the blame, he took the blame, And we weren’t expecting this, And we’re still not expecting this.
