After centuries of Spanish rule, the people rose up to claim their own land in 1898, only to find that Spain had sold their islands to the USA. Independence was to take another 50 years. A people who have been accustomed to being owned by others still need to find freedom; now from poverty and its attendant enforcers of poor health and education.
They appreciate more than we do the value of the big red envelope that enables CARD-Davao on Mindanao and Quidan Kaisahan on Negros to help the people of the Philippines find their own independence from the chains of poverty.
